What is slowed and reverb?
A music style where songs are pitched down and given heavy reverb to create a slower, more atmospheric version. Originated from DJ Screw's "chopped and screwed" technique in 90s Houston rap, found new life on TikTok and SoundCloud in the late 2010s.
How does DRIFT slow down songs?
DRIFT shifts playback speed (varispeed) — the same physical process as a tape machine running slow or fast. Pitch and tempo move together, locked at a 1:1 ratio. Negative values slow and pitch down: −3 semitones gives a subtle, dreamy slowdown, −7 is deep and otherworldly. Positive values speed and pitch up: +3 is energised and bright, +7 is frantic and hyper.
Why does it sound better than other slowdown tools?
Most browser-based tools use phase vocoder algorithms that try to slow tempo without dropping pitch — these introduce granular artifacts and transient smearing. DRIFT uses true varispeed, which is mathematically clean. The trade-off (pitch drops with tempo) is exactly the slowed-and-reverb aesthetic, not a limitation.
What do the four effects do?
Reverb puts the track in a room — a damped tail with early reflections, not a wash of noise. Tape adds soft saturation plus the wow and flutter of a machine whose transport is not quite steady. Lo-Fi closes the bandwidth from both ends for a radio or cassette-dub character. Crush reduces bit depth, from a light grit down to two bits. Each is a single amount, and they run in that order.
Which format should I save in?
MP3 unless you have a reason not to — a slowed track runs longer than the original, and lossless formats get big fast. FLAC is lossless like WAV but roughly half the size. WAV is there for editors that want it raw. Pick one under Settings and the button stops asking. Files are written to your Music folder, so any player finds them.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The audio file you load is decoded, processed, and rendered entirely inside your browser. Nothing reaches a server. The tool works fully offline once the page is loaded.
What audio formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus, M4A, AAC, 3GP, WebM, AIFF — anything the browser can decode. Whatever the file's own sample rate is, DRIFT resamples it to the rate your device runs at, so 44 100 and 96 000 Hz sources both play correctly. Exports are 16-bit PCM WAV.
